This Sunday is Mother’s Day and if you are anything like me then you are probably wondering what to get her and how to get it without spending too much money. I’ve come up with a few suggestions – keep in mind this list is intended more for Mom as in your mom, not the mother of your kids – although most of the items can be applied in either case.
- Visit her or phone her if the distance is too great. All Moms love to hear from their kids so make it happen.
- Make a Mother’s Day card complete with photos and some description of your recent activities.
- If you are really feeling retro then write an actual snail mail letter (with photos).
- Candies – yes, these cost money but don’t buy a huge box of specialty chocolate. Go small, go cheap and she will like it just as much.
- Flowers – this is another one where you can spend a lot of money but don’t have to. If there are flowers in bloom in your garden (or your neighbours) then pick them and use for the gift.
- Treat her to dinner – either invite her over for a frugal meal at your house or prepare some food and bring it to her house. Either way she will be thrilled.
- Do some chores – mow the lawn, weed the garden, wash the car, do some home repairs for her – all these actions will be greatly appreciated and will be worth a lot to her.
- Listen to her – let’s face it a lot of us don’t really listen to our parents so for a change of pace ask your mom to tell you some things about her past. This could end up being one of the more painful gifts you ever give, but hey, it’s not your day right? 🙂
There you have it – any other suggestions for frugal and cheap ways for a Mother’s Day gift?

My mom is getting locally-made “bath bombs” (one of her personal favorites), though #6 would be on the list if I weren’t in the wrong country.
Let’s face it, most mothers likely want the gift of time. If you can’t be present, then find something else that says: “Hey I spent a few hours thinking about you.”
So here’s my fallback gift: hand-made card. For bonus points, add a custom note on the inner-left hand side that actually contains references to things that happened since last Mother’s day. Say “thank you” for a few of them 🙂
BTW, I’m not kidding. I actually have card stock, stamps and markers, but honestly, construction paper molded by adult hands, would definitely be pretty cool. You can even get the kids in on it, make the cover and the back and give them each a surface on the inside.
Personally, I went through a year where I wrote a custom limerick in every birthday card and other where I pulled a famous quote relevant to the person. (I have a sizable family so I did about 20-24 cards each year). I even wrote a wedding card with a limerick. These cards were all well-received.
That’s a great idea Gates.

Those are some great ideas! Another inexpensive, but very sentimental idea is making a memory book for your mom.

#8 is great! I do that with my Grandma when I am on the phone with her. I can even set the phone down, go do something, come back and she is still talking. Kidding, I would never actually do that……
Kyle – haha – that is a good idea. I know you were kidding but still….
Frugal parent – a memory book is good.
