President Obama has recently announced that there will be a one-time $250 stimulus check in 2010 to recipients of Social Security. This bonus check is part of of his ongoing effort to stimulate the economy out of recession. Please note that Congress has yet to approve this bill.

Anyone who is currently receiving Social Security (SS) payments will be eligible for the $250 check. There are also some other groups who will receive this check including SSI and disabled veterans.

It is not known at this time when the payments will be made but it is likely that they will be paid in the first quarter of 2010 (ie before the end of March).

How much will this cost the government?
According to White house officials, the cost of all the stimulus checks will be $13 billion. A large amount of money but don’t forget that the stimulus package for 2009 was almost $800 billion.
Why is the government doing this?
The government is giving out this money in order to try to stimulate the economy. Because of problems in the financial markets and housing markets over the last 2 years, there has been a slowdown in economic activity in America and many job losses. By putting extra money into the economy it is hoped that the decline of the economy can be slowed down or even reversed.
Will there be a Social Security raise this year?
No, in fact part of the reason the $250 bonus check was created was to make up for the fact that there is no cost of living raise in Social Security payments this year.
Will it be a check or electronic payment?
The $250 should be given to you in the same format you currently receive your regular Social Security payment. If you get your SS payment by check then the $250 will also be by check. If you get your SS payment deposited in to your bank account then the $250 will also be deposited into your bank account.

I keep checking out the social security web site and in one sentence they say we are going to get the stimulus that so many of us need to survive and then in the next sentence they would say we don’t get one. What the hell? we can’t even get a straight answer. I called social security two weeks ago and she told me they haven’t yet approved the payments. I had to move to a trailer park just so I could save a few dollars to try and get by through the month. Please if anyone out there knows if we are to get the stimulus for sure please let me know.

You know it is a damn shame that the Government has their noses into everything we do. I am disabled and live on only $716 a month, try doing that with today’s economy. Just another note about the stimulus. If we elect a President and he approves bills, etc. what right does the Congress and Senate have to decline them, why bother to have a President if Congress and Senate are more important, they get big raises and after serving one term get 100% retirement benefits. This program was to be strictly voluntary; money that participants elected to put in would be tax deductible; annuity payments to retirees would never be taxes as income, just to name a few. To top all this, many people have to claim as much as 85% of their SS as untaxed income if they choose to continue working, not too many people can totally retire. If you insist on sitting on butts and do nothing but complain you will get anywhere. We all know the politicians only care about those who contribute to their campaigns. Seeing we are in the lower class of the working class heroes, we are left in the shadows. So sitting there and just complaining about not getting your check is not very productive.
Now you can email those who voted down the Stimulus check and let them know how you feel. And come election you will show the same locality they showed you. It may not sound very productive, but stop and think for a moment. There are veterans out who also need that check, and they sacrificed their lives so these politicians can live. And seeing how the politicians turned their backs on them as well as us, don’t you think we should do something to show the veterans our thanks. This time I think its up to us to figth for them now!
There are 57 million or so on Social Security, and if you take half of that figure. That is a hell of a lot votes that will not go the way these politicians may think. We put them in office, and now its up to us to take them out of office, or at least try. Hi. I am a disabled mother of two. I am only 32yrs. old and not able to maintain a job because of my disabilities. I hate the fact that I live in constant pain and cannot make a better life for my children. I did finish school and finished college and even with my skills, school, and employment background I still cannot find something that I can do. I have to raise my children on a very small amount a month as well as provide a home and nessessities. Every penney counts and we are really going to need it with school starting again very soon. My disability was the cause of a car accident, 13 at the time, and my life was tragically turned upside down. We could really use the help too.

I’m really pissed off too! After I pay my bills, as a single mother of 3. I have about 120 bucks left to live on for the rest of the month. I’m disabled and therefore I only get 98.00 a month in food stamps. I just really don’t know what to do. I personally don’t believe they even read our emails they have someone else read them and answer for them. They suck! All of Washington.
At this time there has been no plans to have a 2010 stimulus check. In the last few months there have some talks from Obama and other people in congress that there might be a stimulus check in 2010.
If there were to be a stimulus check this year in 2010 it would be similar to the 2009 stimulus check. The 2009 stimulus check involved sending out $250 checks to everyone that was retired as of Jan 1, 2009 and a few other retired groups. If you were to get a check it would have come between April 2009 and June 2009.
Those that are currently employed still have a tax cut in effect that started last year as part of the 2009 stimulus check. Last year everyone saw a ~$20 extra amount on each pay check as a result of this tax cut. In 2010 as part of the stimulus check that amount is $12-$15 per pay check. It is lower in 2010 because it was only active during part of 2009.

During a plan to help stimulate the economy in his own way. $250 stimulus checks for those on social security, veterans and rail road retirees. Those working get a weekly tax credit that over the coarse of the year totals $400 a person. Those on unemployment got their own benefits like extended benefits and partially paid for COBRA.
Everyone is curious what President Obama will do with the 2009 stimulus act and how that will impact any possible Stimulus Check 2010.

I would like to input here. This minimal stimulus is a joke, we have bailed out all of these big corporation with multi-billion dollar checks. I am neither on SS or SSI, yet as a working person we also could use some extra money because when raising a family today with the inflation and the wages being lowered we have been hit hard and nothing is going down the prices keep going up. So let’s just say that every legal, tax paying, productive member of society gets a stimulus for $5,000.00 each. Wow, we could really stimulate the economy with that. I agree with Tom, it comes down to contacting your congressmen and senators and let’s add the state congressmen and senator’s to that list along with the President. They all need to be aware that come election, since they have not worked for us and supported us with helping out in these economic times, we will not support them in their bid to not help us like they have been hired to do.

I am not someone who will be getting a check and I don’t usually post to this site. However I recieved a message from Boxer’s office re 250.00 stimulus check being mailed out to those on Medicare to fill donut hole. I recieved it yesterday. It was a waring also to be aware of any scams, there has been repotrs of people calling other’s re mailing of checks. If you receive one to report it. She stated that all checks wll be mailed to the same address you use regulary for your beneifits automatically.
