The state of New Jersey has been hit quite hard by the current economic downtown and state unemployment levels have been rising. The unemployment rate in NJ is now 9.7% (up from 9.3% prior to August) which is coincidentally the same as the national average. New Jersey has lost 155,700 jobs since December 2007, when the jobless rate was 4.5 percent.
As a result of these high unemployment rates New Jersey state has qualified for unemployment benefit extensions which were introduced as part of the 2009 stimulus package.
Unemployment benefits currently available in New Jersey
At the moment there are a total of 79 weeks of unemployment available:
- Initial unemployment benefits (UB – 26 weeks) – These are the regular unemployment benefits which are available regardless of the economy.
- Emergency unemployment benefits Tier I (EUC Tier I – 20 weeks)
- Emergency unemployment benefits Tier II (EUC Tier II – 13 weeks)
- Emergency benefits will be paid by the same method as the regular benefits (direct deposit or check).
- Extended benefits (EB – 20 weeks)
- 13 weeks from bill H3548 – Note that this has not passed yet.
The past year has not been very good for a lot of American workers. Because of the 2008 financial crisis and recession – millions of Americans have lost their jobs. The current national unemployment rate is 9.7% as of Sept 4. While many workers will find new jobs within the time period of existing employment benefits – many more will run out of benefits before finding a new job.
On September 22, the House passed legislation called Bill H3548 which will allow any states with a total unemployment rate (TUR) of 8.5% or higher to be eligible for federal funding which will allow 13 more weeks of extended unemployment benefits for those people who have exhausted all the current benefits. If this bill is passed then New Jersey would qualify for another 13 weeks of extended benefits.

wow, GO OREGON W/ STATE SPONSORED BENEFITS -OEB!
I exhausted my EB Benefits on September 9,2009. I have sent out more than a hundred resumes and been on numerous interviews to no avail. My monthly rent is #1100.00, I pay all of my own utilities, and we still have to eat. My income consist of $577.00 monthly in dependent benefits for my daughter from her father’s Social Security Disability Claim. This is no where near enough to keep my family going. I am really starting to worry that if somrthing doesn’t happen soon that my family will become a part of the homeless population. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Has anyone heard if the Bill to extend employment has passed. I have been out of work for almost two years. If the government has funds to study bats, they should have money to help out their citizens. Remember Tuesday is Election day Vote!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trying to survive here in NJ. I too have been out 2 years. After spending each morning in the papers and alternate sources I spend another 8 hours each night on the internet applying for everything to no avail., getting wait listed, practically selling my soul for 1/2 the salary I was getting. Desperately I hired a head hunter with the last of my credit card availability, which has been A TOTAL WASTE!!!!!!!! My benefits are over and have 1 more check of an educational fund left. At that point I and my family of 4 will have nothing to live on. I have been waiting to find out about the 3rd extension which has passed but not disbursed. Wake up Congress… we are in trouble here… let’s see how your kids like living on cereal, you would see that the extensions went through awfully fast if the shoe was on the other foot!
I know that they are starving in other countries, but we are in big trouble here too! If we are not strong we will falter and no longer be able to help others and we will all sink. Slow down the aid to other countries, tighten the influx of immigrants for now. Just those 2 things should give much needed money for more aid to our country and the people struggling here.

I too, am trying to keep house but not looking good. Monster etc has been ineffective as well as others. have exhausted my EB and am down to my last dime. Have car up for sale and other property. Trying to survive. I am not much good for my family right now. no sunglasses needed here as future is not so bright
can I pull my simple IRA money out early to survive this unemployment and exhausted benefits? The future is dim but so is today
I have contacted Sen Robert Menadez (NJ Dem) at his website. Maybe if other voters put the pressure on him and other Senators they would get the message. Which of course is we need the extension. How would they like to tell their kids sorry there just any money for food or school supplies etc. I really think they don’t care!
My tier 2 extension is about to expire, do I qualify for the EB extension, that would 20 weeks more???? pls someone let me know!!!
Just found this update on NJ dol… copied and pasted it.Additional Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) Benefits Available On November 6, 2009, President Obama signed legislation providing additional Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) benefits. The new law provides up to 20 additional weeks of EUC benefits in states with an unemployment rate of 8.5 percent or higher, which includes New Jersey beginning November 8, 2009.Letters are being mailed on November 9, 2009, to advise individuals who exhausted all federally funded extended benefit programs or were disqualified from receiving Extended Benefits (EB) due to specific separation issues (such as misconduct or refusal of suitable work) about this new program. This letter advises them that they will also receive a monetary determination letter and a separate certification notice with instructions on how to claim EUC benefits on the Internet at http://www.njuifile.net or by telephone. The first two weeks of potential eligibility for these additional EUC ben

Unemployment benefits extended for NJ residents
The Associated Press
TRENTON, N.J. – Thousands of unemployed New Jerseyans will not need to file paperwork with the state to qualify for additional jobless benefits.
President Barack Obama signed legislation Friday that extends unemployment benefits by up to 20 weeks for those in states , including New Jersey , where the jobless rate is 8.5 percent or above.
State labor officials say 65,000 eligible residents , who previously exhausted all available state and federally funded extended benefits or are ineligible for other programs , will have their new claims automatically filed so they can continue receiving unemployment benefits.
The state will notify eligible residents via mail this coming week.
IVE BEEN ON UI FOR A YEAR AND A HALF AND ITS TOUGH TO FIND A JOB OUT HERE IM GOING CRAZY WONDERING IF IM GOING TO MAKE ENDS MEET IM THANKFULL FOR THE STATE OF NJ EXTENDING THE UI THANK U
I was on unemployment receiving tier II benefits and when I filed this week I was told I was not receiving any more benefits because it was a year since I filed. I was previously eligilble for a 13 week extension which I received about 5 weeks of. I can’t dare get anyone on the phone. Does anyone know what this is about and is this tier 3 going to kick in and help out???
Rob, not sure how it is in your state, but i guess it is similar to florida where i live. it sounds like your claim is similar to mine on 11/02/09 my benefit year was up, so when i claimed weeks on my scheduled claim date which was 11/10/09 it only paid me for 1 week, the week ending 10/31/09. the 2nd week which was week ending 11/7/09 was not paid because they had to have there computer system check if i was eligible for a new benefit year which i wasnt, so then after a week of waiting the computer put me back on my tier 2 benefits which they sent out payment today for the 1 week they had been holding. i did call a few times during that week and spoke to a couple different rep’s just to make sure things were moving along, so if you can get through i recommend that you double check with them. but from what it sounds like they held up your payment while they run you through the system to see if you have wages for a new claim. hope this info helps. on a side note it would have been nice of them to give me some idea of what was going on but yeah right. when was your benefit year scheduled to end from a guess it was on the 1st week of this 2 week claim and that’s why it’s holding both weeks up. if that is the case once they run you through the system if you do not have wages for a new claim they should automatically put you back on tier 2 to finish the weeks you still had to claim on that.
Received notice of potential eligibility on new extension. Have yet to receive monetary or certification letter. Has anyone in nj received their’s yet?
Have not received monetary or determination letter yet in NJ either!
Honestly it is reassuring to know that because I am in NJ as well and have yet to receive the letter so they may be backed up.
Glad to hear I am not alone. I guess I will still go online and file on the 25th like they said even if I don’t get the letter.

Still waiting for monetary or determination letter in NJ. . . . Let’s keep each other posted please.
Has anyone in NJ received their monetary and certification letters yet?
Should one call on the 25th like the first letter states?
i havent received the mon. or determination letter, only the elegibility one. hopefully it will come b4 next week, if not im just gonna call the 25th
When did you guys receive your eligibility letters? The only thing I got was dated 11/2/09 from NJ unemployment saying that they were aware my benefits were about to be exhausted and if the government were to provide an extension that all potentially eligibile individuals would be notified by mail.
Also, I went to njuifile.com just to see what would happen when I put in my SS # and Pin as if I were claiming weekly benefits and it told me “cannot be processed online. File claim by phone. Instructions and # to call are printed on claim for benefits form.”
I did this once before when my previous extension ran out and it told me that the claim remaining balance was zero. Supposedly NJ was automatically claiming benefits for all of us. I too wonder if they are just getting the paperwork out to all of us.
I received my mail for today and am still waiting for monetary or determination letter in NJ. I’m praying that it is in tomorrow’s mail. Has anyone heard if we are getting the extra Fifty dollars every two weeks?
11/20/09
Lynda, did you ever get a eligibility letter that others are talking about?
I am still waiting to receive my nj unemployment monetary determination letter? It should have been here by now. Has anyone received a nj monetary letter?
I still haven’t received determinations letters in NJ yet, Joanne. I too wonder if anyone has!
Seems like we’re all in same boat here, all waitn on monetary and determination letters.
I called and was told to call on the 25th like the first letter states. Told not to worry if I hadnt received monetary & certification letter.
Thanks for the information, Michele, makes me feel better.
Thanks Michele that makes me feel better too! I got the mail today and still no monetary letter. Maybe the system is just on super overload!
Janet,
I did get the eligibility letter, but as of today 11/21 I have not received the monetary & certification letter. I’m just afraid that on the 25th when we call or go on the Internet. The system crashes or we can’t get through.
I also still have not received my certification letter…I called this past thursday and finally got through after about trying 20 times and on hold for 30 minutes…I spoke to a very nasty women on the phone and she informed me to just call on November, 25th…I cannot believe what is happening here…I feel like were lambs being led to slaughter..I think they want to make this as hard as possible on us to discourage us…What a country we live in…I wonder if there is going to be a glitch on Wednesday when 65,000 people call or go on the web and not be able to get through…We need to be prepared to show up in person..I for one will be doing this if I can’t get through.
I have still yet to receive the letter. I spoke to a few people in the same position and all have reported the same. So, I hope this is just a NJ backup thing and reading all the replies and lack of anyone that I know to receive information I am confident that all is good. My only problem is what happens when we all call in on Wed..? Be prepared to spend our entire day trying to get through….Good luck to all
I tried to file this morning online, eventhough were supposed to call wednesday. I answered everything like i usually do. the only problem was when i finished, it told me my payment wasnt available at this time. im guessing its because i called monday instead of wednesday… it appears as if my account has been reopened, because it said how much money i have remainin in my account.
i hope its just cuz i called before wed. 25th. because i dont see why they would reopen my account, let me fill out the questions and then tell me the check is not payable at the time. and they gave me a confirmation #
OK I am getting UI but on the check stub, the amount left in the claim is getting low, when I filed this claim it went back on an old claim ad what was left in their, dos anyone know what I will have to do to file the extension or do they just do it? Also I usually get that extra $50.00 chek o my off week on monday, I did not get it today does anyone know why?
i just called to see why my payment for this extension wasnt available after I claimed today. And just like i thought, i called too early lol. but the accounts are already open, and the guy told me i just have to call on wednesday and it should be fine. so i guess the letter we’re waiting for are not really needed, cuz i havent gotten mine yet. but everything is already set.
good thing i called and waited hrs. to talk to some1. i had to ask for a representative in spanish to make the wait on hold shorter lol
Joe, I also tried to file today… LOL. No harm in trying, right? Anyway, I was worried, too, about not receiving my monetary determination letter, but after reading all the replies on here, I figured they just didn’t send it, which was a relief. Anyway, I went to apply and it said I was assigned a Monday or Tuesday (it’s always been tuesday), and if I was starting a NEW account, Wed. would be the day to file. This message was different than in the past week when I tried to file, which just told me I had to call it in, and nothing else. This tells me we are getting our money when we’re supposed to. However, mine wouldn’t let me go in and answer all my questions or see my account as yours did. Have you already exhausted your previous benefits? I have. I’m wondering if the message is different depending on monetary or account status.
I have not yet received a monetary letter. However, I just went online to claim a check and it went thru. Crazy! It was all set up and ready to go!
Joanne, how did you claim a check, the date to claim is wed the 25th. you are Jersey right. Confused in jersey
