New York Unemployment Extensions – 13 More Weeks Of Extended Benefits?

[update on May 12  New York extends unemployment by 13 weeks]
[update on May 19 – Unemployment bill to extend EB by 13 weeks has been passed by legislature].

The state of New York has been hit pretty hard by the current economic climate and unemployment levels have been rising.  As a result of these  high unemployment rates New York state has qualified for unemployment benefit extensions which were introduced as part of the 2009 stimulus package.

Unemployment benefits currently available in New York

At the moment there are a total of 59 weeks of unemployment available to New Yorkers:

  • 26 weeks – These are the regular unemployment benefits which are available regardless of the economy.
  • 33 weeks – This is Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) which is made up of a 20 week segment followed by a 13 week segment.  Emergency benefits will be paid by the same method as the regular benefits (direct deposit or check).

Will there be another 13 weeks of extended benefits?

The state government including Gov. David A. Paterson, is currently working on this extension which would involve about $645 million of federal money along with state money for funding.  The reason for the delay is that New York, along with several other states have laws which need changing in order to accept the federal funding.  If the legislation is passed it will provide an additional 13 weeks of benefits to approximately 120,000 New Yorkers for a total of 72 weeks of unemployment benefits.

The’re just running off all the bills to be addressed this afternoon – I think UI will be the first after they’re thru with this stuff – I don’t know whether we will se a vote, but maybe SUSANNY knows about that – We will see something positive though!!

They always run late, but it’s coming – Sorry I posted 2:00 but that’s what the original graphic said this morning. It’s coming up though!!

I know they’re mentioning all the bills, but UI extension was the first one that was mentioned at the beginning, in case anybody missed it

Don’t know if they’re voting, but it seems like when it said 2:00, it might be Pacific Standard TIme, which is 5:00 our time – We will know something good when it comes to the floor whether the vote is today or not

Sorry guys, and then it becomes a bill. Does anybody think they will have this taken care of within the next two weeks?

THEY JUST HAD SPEAKERS TALKING…NOW THEY ARE TAKING A BREAK…MOST LIKELY THEY WILL NOT VOTE ON IT FOR A COUPLE HOURS..WHEN I SEE IT I WILL POST IT, SO JUST HANG IN THERE GUYS…

THEY ARE TAKING ABOUT THE SWINE FLU NOW….SO THE VOTE WILL COME LATER THIS EVENING BECAUSE UNEMPLOYMENT IS 15 ON THE LIST FOR THE DAY AND THATS LAST.. IF YOU HAVE TIME WARNER CABLE ITS ON CHANNEL 147

Let?s face it everyone ? We all heard the comments ? It will pass ? The Domcrats will vote for it because new job creation and job recovery takes more than 8 months with all the lost jobs during the years prior to President Obama taking office, and Republicans support it because they too care about the people, but they will blame President Obama that new job creation hasn?t happened yet ? Regardless, it will pass ? I think the vote will be available by 7 tonight, and I?m not so sure that it has to go through the Senate ? I think someone on here defined what ?suspension? means, and it is not a bad thing but a good thing ? It will move faster, and I think will be effective by the end of this month or the beg of October the latest! Thank God and all of us who wrote, emailed and made the calls so that the people who spoke knew how bad things really are, and that we are not lazy or looking for hand-outs ? Every person who doubts us should see what we just witnessed ? Amen!
That was fascintating to watch – I have no doubt it will be approved, and I thought I saw on CSPAN that they will have the recorded vote
available by around 6:30-7. Power to the People!!!

nice, good news all

now errrr what happens come the New Year when everything is still pretty stagnant? let’s not think that far ahead!

SUSANNY or whoever:

In the case of “suspension,” and “fast tracking,” and since I don;t know exactly what these mean, doesn’t anybody think that it means that it goes straight to the President and doesn’t even have to go thru the Senate in this particular case? Anybody know for sure?

I THINK WHEN THEY FAST TRACK A BILL THEY JUST GET IT TO CONGRESS FOR A VOTE FASTER THEN USUAL…BUT I THINK IT STILL HAS TO GO TO SENATE FOR A VOTE.

JOHN I DONT EVEN WANNA THINK THAT FAR AHEAD….I WANNA RELAX FOR A MONTH OR TWO BEFORE I HAVE TO WORRY AGAIN IF I DONT FIND WORK…ENOUGH WITH THE STRESS FOR A WHILE!

TO ANSWER QUESTIONS…I JUST HEARD ON THE NEWS THE BILL WILL MOVE ON TO THE SENATE WHERE IT WILL BE TAKEN UP SOON! I FEEL LIKE I HAVE A LITTLE BREATHING ROOM TO TAKE A DEEP BREATH NOW…IM GONNA RELAX, WATCH TV AND GO TO BED EARLY TONITE! THIS STRESS IS UNREAL..MY DOC GAVE ME SOMETHING TO TAKE FOR THE STRESS WHEN I NEED IT CUZ I HAVE BEEN GETTING PANIC ATTACKS FROM ALL THE ANXIETY OF LIFE WITHOUT A JOB, BOY I MISS MY JOB AND THE ROUTINE THAT GOES WITH IT!

ok so we just keep claiming and were going to get 13 weeks? also i read that intill they can get the economy in a better postion they are going to be doing 3 month increments i read that on aol yesterday .

Laurie , Thanks for the info from yesturday I was not on all day .
I know it was passes today does it now go to senate and how long will we have a lapse?

Thanks everyone

Sorry i dont post it often. but i ran out of sheets that your suppouse to write down the jobs. do i call and ask for more?.

IF THEY REALLY WANT TO IMPROVE THE ECONOMY ALL STATES SHOULD GET UNEMPLOYMENT, I HEAR SENATE IS WORKING ON A VERSION OF THAT ALSO, SO ALL STATES CAN GET UNEMPLOYMENT, WHAT MAKES ONE STATE BETTER THEN ANOTHER., A PERCENTAGE POINT? WE ALL NEED THE SAME BASIC THINGS! FOOD , SHELTER AND GAS FOR OUR CARS TO LOOK FOR JOBS THAT ARE HARD TO GET. ALSO DON’T FORGET THIS SUNDAY IN 5 DAYS OUR WORK SEARCH FORMS GO OUT AGAIN! I HAD TO GET STAMPS FROM THE POST OFFICE YESTERDAY.

Otto, I noticed that and I believe they did that to john and joey. None of you would talk like that.
On a positive note. They passed it. Now it goes to senate and then the President correct?
Susanny, I agree with you. All states should get it. Many of the ones that spoke on behalf of the bill were states that didnt qualify. Do you guys think we would have a gap in benefits?

So unemployed, I was just thinking about her.lol

I would love to tell her hahahahaha..better yet i knnow she has to be watching this. Hey Deb! tell your friend or whatver that she was wrong! As you can see the bill is going to be passed by the senate now and then signed by the president..how you like those berries???

If both branches of congress have differences in opinion on the scope of the extension it may stall the process creating a gap.

Jenny you can go to the labor website and print them out.
You have to go threw all forms it takes a minute to find If I remember it took me a while to find.

Hi – does anyone know if there has been any talk of extending COBRA past the 18 month period of when you can continue with the insurance provider of you past employer? I did not qualify for the 65% and am paying the full boat, but still would like to have benefits. I know I wont qualify for Medicad because I own a home and a car
