New York Unemployment Extensions – 13 More Weeks Of Extended Benefits?

Please note the comments are closed on this post because of technical difficulties. The discussion has been moved to this post.

[update on May 12  New York extends unemployment by 13 weeks]
[update on May 19 – Unemployment bill to extend EB by 13 weeks has been passed by legislature].

The state of New York has been hit pretty hard by the current economic climate and unemployment levels have been rising.  As a result of these  high unemployment rates New York state has qualified for unemployment benefit extensions which were introduced as part of the 2009 stimulus package.

Unemployment benefits currently available in New York

At the moment there are a total of 59 weeks of unemployment available to New Yorkers:

  • 26 weeks – These are the regular unemployment benefits which are available regardless of the economy.
  • 33 weeks – This is Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) which is made up of a 20 week segment followed by a 13 week segment.  Emergency benefits will be paid by the same method as the regular benefits (direct deposit or check).

Will there be another 13 weeks of extended benefits?

The state government including Gov. David A. Paterson, is currently working on this extension which would involve about $645 million of federal money along with state money for funding.  The reason for the delay is that New York, along with several other states have laws which need changing in order to accept the federal funding.  If the legislation is passed it will provide an additional 13 weeks of benefits to approximately 120,000 New Yorkers for a total of 72 weeks of unemployment benefits.

looks like there are still imposters or one imposter on this board (also an imposter who can’t spell)

You now jen my mom has worked for Medicad for thirty years I just called and asked her she said no cobra after 18 months and at medicad they do not care if you have a car or home the only way they put a lean on it is if your in a nursing home and they are paying for it.
Hope this helps

John, I said that that wasnt you because we all know you are going crazy looking for work just like all of us. That person who is bothering again is just mad. I know the people here are better than that.

Anyways, my mother just heard in the spanish news channel that they approve the 13 weeks. That it’s confirmed we are getting them. I told her that they voted yes but, that the bill still has to go to senate. She said no. That the news said we are getting them. Can anyone help me out? It does have to go to senate right?/

I apllied for medicaid a few months ago for my daughter and I. I wasn’t aprroved for it my unemployment was to high I receive the max of 405 a week they said it was to much and that was before they added the
Extra $25 a wk. I apllied for an insurance called health plus and was accepted thank god They have an income requirement for families for a family of 2 was about 1500 or 1600 a month can’t really remember
But I do remeber the lady telling me I just made it sad part is If you have kids it would help a lot

So unemployed, I worked for a managed care organization. The program you qualified for is called Family Health Plus. It’s for individuals that dont qualify for medicaid. I am surprised that this person didnt try helping more. Do u have children in your house hold under 18? I know I may be pushing it but, that does help.

Jen

If you can remind me later in the day and I can get the number for you, if you would like to call

Carmen:

I originally thought that “fast-track” meant that the bill would surpass the Senate and go straight to the President, but after reading various articles, I think it still has to go thru the Senate first – I’m confident that they won’t hold it up, as I think all sides want to get this done as close to the end of September as possible – the beginning of October the latest!

As far as Cobra and the Federal tax on UI benefits, which is crazy, I think these matters will be taken up later – The pressing issue was making sure the 13 week extension went through ASAP! I got goose-bumps listening to the speakers defend us, by arguing that we are not lazy and have not stopped looking, but that there are just too few jobs for so many people – Of course we’d rather work than be unproductive and depend on a small stipend to barely get by and try and pay bills while continuing to look for work! I wish every employed person I know could have heard the arguments for the extension – AMEN!!

this is strange i heard what carmen heard that they have extended it there is no waiting not sure what all the talk on the board is about waiting for it to go through a different channel of people . All the articles in the news say it went through were getting it .

No, there can’t be any extension until the Senate also passes it and the Prez signs it.. The Senate bill is S.1647 last I heard that bill remains in committee..But from what I read it suppose to be voted on soon and if passed Obama has promised he will sign it..

But I’ve also read the Senate has other different UI extension bills, so there maybe some haggling and compromising before any bill reaches the Prez..

YES THATS WHAT I HEARD BILL..SENATE IS CONSIDERING A BILL THAT INCLUDES ALL STATES, BUT I THINK THEY WILL DO IT BEFORE OCT I HOPE! AND I RESEARCHED FAST TRACK TOO..JUST MEANS THE BILL GETS TO CONGRESS FASTER THEN OTHER BILLS…THEY KINDA PUSH IT UP AHEAD OF OTHERS NOT SO IMPORTANT…

yes the bill needs to go through the senate and the senate has three bills -1647-3404 and 3548 the only bill that has the 8.5% is 3548 for sure the bill can be changed it is not a done deal once it gets to the senate it could be a totally different bill……….

it goes to the Senate. Might be S.1647 the Senate version that was introduced by Sen. Jack Reed in early August. I checked the Senate schedule for this week and it has S.1647 HR 3404 HR3548 listed together and the sub-cap BILLS THAT MAY RECEIVE FLOOR ACTION THIS WEEK.

SO Unemployed,

Yes thank you so much. whenever you can get around to getting the number=that would be great. It is amazing that 405 a week is too much money to qualify for Medicad.

Family health plus Member services # is 1-800-300-8181 I’m qiute
Sure they can direct u to the right department there other insurance place
Health first, affinity and a few others that you could google and look
Into hope this helps

Jen, from experience dealing with these programs I can tell you that Health Plus and Wellcare and good for Kids.. Health First and Health Plus are good for Adults. There are about 16 healthplans in NYC. Like So Unemployed mentioned member services can help you decide which one you want. I dont recommend Fidelis. they are a catholic health plan and there are certain things they wont cover. Good luck.

Stephanie, I guess I was right to tell my mom that the news lady must of been refering to the house saying yes. Now we have to go to Senate and get another vote. Lets hope that they do this quickly so we dont get gaps in between our payments. I hope this xmas is better than last. My son turns 2 on x-mas eve and I would like to be calm and relaxed.

The Senate website is http://www.senate.gov, and if you click on active legislation on the right hand side, you will see that Unemployment Extension is on the list of bills that may receive floor action this week. Unfortunately, that bill is only listed on bills that will receive action in the House chamber, not the Senate.

Ok I see the number for our senators but what is the bill that passed yesturday that we need to mention is it the s 1647?

Thank you for the info on insurance-very much helpful. I dont post often but read the comments several times a day-It has been my sanity check when I think I am losing my mind. The support has been wonderful-I have friends telling me take ANY job and they just dont seem to understand how hard I have searchd-the numerous resumes, job posting–all on a daily basis!!!!! I know you all feel the pain

THANKS FOR THE INFO CAROL…WE WILL HAVE TO CHECK IT NEXT WEEK..AFTER ALL THERE ARE ONLY 2 MORE DAYS LEFT THIS WEEK…HOPEFULLY IT WILL COME UP IN THE SENATE NEXT WEEK.

I DO SEE WHERE IT SAYS AS OF 9/22 IT HAS BEEN RECIEVED IN THE SENATE, SO MAYBE NEXT WEEK I HOPE! BUT IN THE SENATE IT WOULD BE BILL # S. 1647 IS THAT RITE?

If I’m not mistaken, I believe that they can take H.R.3548 under consideration for discussion and put that to a vote. This would probably be the quickest resolution for us. If they choose to discuss the 2 Senate bills, this could take longer.

Marly911: I appreciate your consideration in sharing those links for potential jobs – I have seen Time Warner postings every day in my many e-mail alerts, and though I’ve never applied, mainly because there is no position for what I specialize in, I have inquired, and have found out that for many of the openings as with Cablevision, the days and hours available are rarely M-F and 9-5, and weekends and nights are required for many of the open positions. For those who can work on weekends or nights, both companies are a good thing to look into – I can’t work during those times, but might need to reconsider – One good benefit is you get free cable, internet, and phone if you work for them – which saves alot of money right there – So even though it doesn’t work for me now, I just wanted you to know that it is nice of you to share, and I’m feeling really closer to people who I’ve never met, due to this forum – We are all in a situation that, as the legislators argued yesterday, was not our fault – And we are not lazy or have not stopped looking – Despite a little worry I have that HR 3548 might be changed once it gets to the Senate, I still think it will be 13 weeks and cover NYS, which S 1647 does. We have a good Senators in NYS who I know will look out for our best interests. It’s just a matter of time, but thank God, most of us have not yet exhausted our last 7 weeks, and hopefully there will be no gap for everybody, and for those who might have a gap, it won’t be that long – I’m really encouraged by the influence our call, letters and e-mails have had on helping to move things along quicker, and in an organized manner –

This is really a good forum – I am humbled, as I never thought it would take this long for me to get a job, but I am in the company of people who despite us being of all different political views, we are all in the same messy situtation – and we know it is not our fault. Solidarity!

Jen:

I went through a similar experience as you some years ago, when I was collecting unemployment, and was told I was making too much to be eligible for Medicaid and/or Food Stamps – This is why they must pass the extension, as since we are not eligible for the State programs when receiving benefits, if they were to cut the benefits, the State programs would be overwhelmed with the amount of people who might need to apply for those programs, and with no UI benefits, we would be eligible for those programs like Medicaid – It’s totally an unfair system – Our benefit rate is not enough to cover all the bills and other expenses, and it’s just hard to believe that they consider it too much – I was shocked when it happened to me – Good luck!

Hey, just wanted to thank you all for the info.
For anyone that’s interested. There is a site where you can screen yourself to see if your qualify and aprox. how much you may get when you apply for food stamps. I know many of dont want to do that because it’s a state program but, with these hard times any little work helps. I just recently applied for food stamps. I get $361. a month and it’s my 20 month old son and myself. That helps ALOT.. My mother gave me a letter saying she provides shelter and gives us food. I didnt present my unemployment info. I would still qualify even if I did present them with that info but, i chose not to becuase it didnt make a huge difference. I will get the site and post it in a few.

KCI, yesterday congress voted yes to another extension. Now we hae to wait for the senate and the President to sign. We wont know information until maybe next week.

I am sure they will move fast on passing some form of an extension. The last thing they want to see is more stores going under due to poor holiday sales as well as more credit card defaults and foreclosures. A key to economic recovery is spending. The people who are lucky enough to still have jobs are spending less. By granting more extensions they are helping the economy tread water.

Hi Carmen,

I was told by some one up in nys albany unemployment office that we should contuine to apply for our benifits every week even if it ends and still has not kicked in yet she said keep on applying, have you heard anything like this?

Carmen

What happens if you don’t report UE? I need the help but think I will get into trouble for not reporting.

Laurie

At first I thought didn’t work for me either but I am just so ready to go back to work, it isn’t funny. I feel like a deadbeat. I know that I am not but it is just one of those days. I wish everyone luck with the UE extension but more so I will ask Santa this Christmas for a job.

Maryl, I dont think they really look into that. I didnt report it. I will get food stamps for a year. You can get a letter from a family saying they are helping you. Your income would be zero and you will get the max. The reason I share this is becuase I have noticed many individuals how dont deserve gettign the help and they are. Im all for being honest and all but, this is help I really need.

Steffie, I havent heard about anything like that. I will wait till monday or tuesday to call the UB office to see what they say.

Maryl, I asked my mom and hit the send botton. She said the worst that can happen would be they stop the food stamps but not very likely.

hello all. your posts have been very informative. I to hope for an extension of federal funds on my unemployment. It seems like they are borrowing from peter to pay pall though. I am an army reservist and my federal tuition for college was cut because of lack of funding. I wonder if that funding is going to the unemployment extension. it is really scary

Carmen, not to be a nudge or anything, but if you misrepresent your income and they catch you, yes, they’ll stop the stamps, but will come after you for what they’ve previously sent. And there’s also fraud to consider. You best be careful. Maybe you won’t get caught, and other people here have told of scams about being long term temps so that their resume looks better, but you know, you’re taking a chance.

And people should be cautious of any advice they pick up here.

Carmen,

A frind of mine who was also on unemployment got completely cut off because she clamied on her taxes that she was starting a new bussiness and therefore had deductions even though she will not be bringing in any money till next year. You have to be really careful because they are catching people and finding ways to cut them off without a dime.

JASON THEY ARE…ALABAMA, ARIZONA, CALIFORNIA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MASS, MICHIGAN, MISSISSIPPI, MISSOURI, NEVADA, NEW JERSEY, NORTH CAROLINA, NEW YORK, OHIO, OREGON, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, SOUGH CAROLINA, TENNESSEE, WASHINGTON, AND WEST VIRGINIA. PLUS THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA AND PUERTO RICO….

deejay
No, the funding for the unemployment extension is coming from extending the 6.2% FUTA tax on employers, which has been in existence for 30 years, and delaying the reduction of that tax until 2011. This will not reduce any other funding and will not add to the national deficit.
