New York Unemployment Extensions – 13 More Weeks Of Extended Benefits?

Please note the comments are closed on this post because of technical difficulties. The discussion has been moved to this post.

[update on May 12  New York extends unemployment by 13 weeks]
[update on May 19 – Unemployment bill to extend EB by 13 weeks has been passed by legislature].

The state of New York has been hit pretty hard by the current economic climate and unemployment levels have been rising.  As a result of these  high unemployment rates New York state has qualified for unemployment benefit extensions which were introduced as part of the 2009 stimulus package.

Unemployment benefits currently available in New York

At the moment there are a total of 59 weeks of unemployment available to New Yorkers:

  • 26 weeks – These are the regular unemployment benefits which are available regardless of the economy.
  • 33 weeks – This is Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) which is made up of a 20 week segment followed by a 13 week segment.  Emergency benefits will be paid by the same method as the regular benefits (direct deposit or check).

Will there be another 13 weeks of extended benefits?

The state government including Gov. David A. Paterson, is currently working on this extension which would involve about $645 million of federal money along with state money for funding.  The reason for the delay is that New York, along with several other states have laws which need changing in order to accept the federal funding.  If the legislation is passed it will provide an additional 13 weeks of benefits to approximately 120,000 New Yorkers for a total of 72 weeks of unemployment benefits.

People like Carmen who use/abuse the system should lose all their benefits. I am reporting this to the DOL.

June, I am not abusing anything.

Tony, you are right. But, I did say the reason i didnt report it was because it didnt make a difference. In fact the lady that did my food stamps told me what to do. She said to get a letter from my mom so I can be eligible for the max. Not alot of workers would tell you that becuase many sometimes dont want to help. I only gave a suggestion and by no means said said hey do this. It was just an advice becuase of what I did. I should be very careful like you said with what I say because then people get the wrong idea. We are all here to help each other and I felt that my experience might help someone else.

Unemployed,
what your friend did was different. When we collect we cant work off the books or put on our taxes that we did because it will come back to us since unemployment shares your income with the IRS. I wouldnt lie on my taxes cause those will seriuosly bite you in the butt.

June, to clarify. My income is low. So I would of qualified for the food stamps anyway. The difference in benefits was about 50. in food stamps. so as you can see I am not abusing anything.

Carmen

I receive food stamps for my daughter and I and I get the max in unemployment
I submitted my unemployment history I submitted everything that they requested and
thank god and I was able to get theMax for a family of 2. Just be careful when u recertify

Carmen if you didn’t tell the truth, then you abused the system. Don’t say it was only $50, falsifying your income is a crime no matter how much it is for. The person I spoke to at the DOL said at the end of the year they match up the records between the departments and you will get caught then. Everyone here has a low income now, but most of us don’t break the law and then brag about it. People like you are taking away from those who really need it and putting this country further into debt. Shame on you.

So Unemployed, Thank you for the advice. I will be careful. Like I said at that moment the worker said it was ok. If the worker thought it was ok I didnt think of anything of it.

June, you are entitled to your opinion and I am not going to go back and forth with you about this. I am not bragging. Someone asked and I gave my opinion. I am not taking away anything from anyone. You can speak to anyone you want. if you take the time to call and ask about what i do or anyone else does here or anywhere then that means you have alot of time in your hands. Have a good day.

WHAT IS THE INCOME LEVEL TO BE ALLOWED FOOD STAMPS? I KNOW IN FLORIDA YOU CAN APPLY FOR FOOD STAMPS ONLINE BUT I DON’T THINK YOU CAN IN NEW YORK. BUT I’M PRETTY SURE MY HUSBAND MAKES TOO MUCH, EVEN THOUGH ITS NOT A LOT. AND I DON’T EVEN GET ANYWHERE NEAR THE MAX FOR UNEMPLOYMENT. ALL I KNOW IS OUR FRIDGE IS ALWAYS BARE, NOT LIKE WHEN I WAS WORKING, IT WAS ALWAYS FULL! WE ARE BUYING DAY TO DAY NOW FOR 3 PEOPLE. THE DAYS OF GOING SHOPPING ALL AT ONCE EVERY TWO WEEKS ARE LONG GONE AND I HOPE THEY COME BACK SOON! IM SO SICK OF UNEMPLOYMENT!

Carmen in case you didn’t know, OUR tax dollars pay for food stamps, so you are STEALING from all of us. It’s not my opinion, it’s the law. I care about this country and what happens to my tax dollars, which is why I took the time to report it. If we all were dishonest like you, everyone here could be getting public assistance instead of scraping by. Shame on you.

I LOVE it that the state worker tells you how to abuse the system. How utterly ridiculous; some of us don’t have relatives who can LIE for us . . . and guess what, they WOULDN’T, because my parents DON’T LIE and wouldn’t CHEAT the government out of anything. People like you make the rest of us look bad. Why don’t you get your brat’s daddy to step up to the plate and support her? You are ALREADY eligible for aid because you have a kid – – this includes health care, WIC, food stamps, etc, etc. Don’t be greedy and insist on getting the maximum. You just make the rest of us ticked off – – why do YOU and your kiddie deserve more than anyone else?

Oh, well, please continue to write your Senators, people! Some of us are honest and not trying to scam the government; we just need a little help until things get turned around.

House Takes Action, Focus Shifts to Senate
Yesterday, The House of Representatives took quick action and an important first step in combating long-term unemployment. The House measure, which passed overwhelmingly by a vote of 331 to 83. The House bill provides 13 weeks of additional benefits to workers in high unemployment states, leaving workers in 23 states-those with unemployment rates below 8.5% (averaged over three months)-with no additional assistance after they exhaust their current unemployment benefits. However, Amid new evidence of surging long-term unemployment, focus must now shift to the Senate for immediate action to provide benefits to laid-off workers in all states. NELP is calling for Congress to enact an extension that provides at least 10 weeks of additional benefits for workers running out of their existing assistance regardless of where they live, and as much as 20 additional weeks of benefits in states with higher unemployment rates. You can take action with this new message by clicking here.

Momentum for extended benefits builds at Senate hearing (September 16, 2009)
Yesterday, the powerful U.S. Senate Finance Committee held a hearing on unemployment benefits. Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), who is the Finance Committee chairman set the tone for the hearing with his opening statement, stating that “In helping our unemployed neighbors, we also help to keep open the neighborhood grocery store, and the neighborhood gas station. In helping our unemployed neighbors, we also help to keep houses out of foreclosure. And in helping our unemployed neighbors, we also help our economy, and ourselves.”

NELP’s chair Beth Shulman was the lead witness at the hearing. The chair of the committee ended the hearing by stating that he would introduce extension legislation “shortly,” which is major progress coming from this critical branch of the Senate. NELP is urging this new expected legislation to include extra extended benefits in every state, and that these benefits would be payable immediately.

I GOT THIS EMAIL TONITE…YOU CAN GO TO THE UNEMPLOYEDWORKERS.ORG FRONT PAGE AND FILL OUT THE PRE WRITTEN FORM FOR YOUR THE SENATORS AND CONGRESSMAN..DO IT NOW DON’T WAIT…SEND IT OUT NOW SO THEY KNOW WE MEAN BUSINESS!

Oh Goodie, the aliases are back… The last few ‘Bill’s’ wasn’t me…And I’ll bet many of these other ‘posters’ are the same, lonely, bored guy..

Oh well, back to the other forum. This one has turned into a joke.

Susanny, I will ask a dumb question..who is Acorn?

Miss K, dont insult my son. One thing is for you to give your opinion and another is for you to be disrespectful.

June, I have paid TAXES for many years just like everyone else. I am not stealing jack from you!

Now back to our topic.

SUSANNY,

According to the NYC Foodstamp quick calculator, your monthly income needs to be less than $1150 a month for a single person.
Someone had posted the link for the calculator, previously and if you go to the prior posts, it will take you directly there. It is very difficult to get food stamps as the income requirements are very low. My Mom is on Social Security and nets about $12,000 a year and she can not even qualify.

Carmen:

I don’t know of the people who are lecturing you are for real or not, but either way, please don’t pay attention to them or get upset – Ignore these fake or overly self-righteous remarks – You are doing whatever you have to do for yourself and son, in terrible times – The stones being thrown by whoever on this forum are not to be believed – If I could get an off the books job while still collecting benefits I certainly would, as do many people – Especially in times like these when there really are so few on the books jobs, or everybody wouldn’t be on this forum – The money we get from UI, especially here in NYC is not enough to feed a family and pay bills for many, so one must do whatever it is – Nobody is searching for you – I think whoever is writing these remarks would also do whatever it takes if they were in dire straights and could get whatever they could when it comes to extra money, food or health care – Look at the CEO’s on Wall Street and Banks giving themselves bonuses from bailout money – You do whatever you can, Carmen, and let those who live in glass houses…..I don’t know how the rest of that saying goes, but you know what I mean – Forget these people – I hope you’re the real Carmen 🙂

In my humble experience, getting a reasonable amount of Food Stamps, if any, for people on UI or Social Security is not easy, and the way they calculate the income of the two seperately or individually is beyond unfair – My mother who receives SS benefits for being retired and a senior citizen applied once, and was offered something like $12 a month – It’s embarrassing enough to go and apply for them, but it a downright insult when you give them your info, and that’s the offer they give you – My mother never took the $12.00 – What the hell can you get for that money that will last more than a week, let along a month!!! Please….That system needs to be changed, along with the way they calculate UI benefits when somebody needs healthcare assistance, and is told their income is too high – Yeah, right!

Laurie:
It’s all set up to make life harder for the lower middle class, the most vulnerable category of Americans.

I gotta agree with Laurie. WallStreet collected a nice Welfare check to the tune of $700 Billion. Working off the books, do what ya gotta do to survive without physically harming someone or property.

Laurie, It is the real me. Thank you so much. Your words meant alot to me. And like you said I am doing whatver I need to do to support myself and my son. And I did what I did because the worker did notice that not only I needed the help but, because she said it wasn’t a big difference. So laurie, thanx again.

By the way Miss K, if I’m not with my sons father was because he was an abusive ass and he HIT me. So no , I wont look for him for help. think before you talk.

Interesting that Laurie, aka Jean Val Jean who was running the resume scam I mentioned, would give blessing to Carmen and her false reporting of income. You can rationalize it any way you want to , it’s still illegal, and I don’t recall that the “everybody else does it” defense ever worked for anybody.

Laurie/Jean, I don’t mind the long self reverential posts, but please don’t start condoning or encouraging illegal behavior. June is right; we all pay for it.

I was wondering where Jean Val whatever was lurking–didnt he say he would never use his real name= guess he found a new alias

JEN HES ALWAYS BEEN LURKING SINCE HE WAS KICKED OFF THE BOARD..AND THIS IS THE REAL SUSANNY NOT A FAKE! AND HES SO EASY TO PICK OUT CUZ OF HIS LONG WINDED POSTS. THATS THE FIRST CLUE!

It’s bad enough that we have to pay big taxes on our small unemployment checks, but even worse that our money goes to people who take advantage of government assistance. The attitude of “doing whatever I need to do” only creates more apathy in the world. How sad for all of us.

Can we just stick to the topic. I realize that this extension is going to go through and there may not be as much conversation on this topic until it is official, but if we can’t all have an intelligent conversation without name calling and judgement, then whats is the point. To each his own, if someone is doing something wrong, they will get caught. Everyone should worry about what is behind their own closed doors…

To anyone that is attacking me and laurie and anybody else. I just want to say that in no way or form was I trying to upset people here. I am single mother that is unemployed by no fault of her own and I WILL DO WHATEVER I HAVE TO DO TO BRING FOOD TO MY TABLE. I have paid LOTS of taxes. I am 28 and have worked since I was 14. If a worker adviced me of getting a letter so I can get the max then that’s what I did. I have been respectful and tried to be helpful. I didnt tell anybody ‘Hey, go and lie so you can get foodstamps or Hey, why dont lie on your taxes so you can get money” I simply said my experience and what I did to get the help. I will not say that everyone here is a liar or dishonest but, sometimes and many can agree if you can get that extra help without it being to complicated you may consider it. The worker said” Ms. can you get a letter from a family member saying they help you? I said yes. she said then you should get it. It will help you more. And she also reminded me that even if they accept for me to get food stamps for a year, unemployment is not a set income. Right now I might have it because of the extension and in two weeks i might not. I dont mean any offense by everything I wrote but, I found a need to express and defend myself from the people that say are so loyal to the system. Again, I have PAID TAXES. Still gettign TAXES taken out from the little bit of money I get because i cant afford to owe the IRS. And last I WILL DO WHATEVER I NEED TO DO TO MAKE SURE MY SON AND FAMILY GETS FOOD ON THE TABLE.

Don, you are right. I will not feed into what people say anymore. I said my side and I’m done. If people want to continue judging or whatever oh well..

Whenever Carmen starts trouble here (which is all the time) a bunch of “new” people suddenly starting posting to defend her. Funny.

Carmen: Well said and done, I would’ve done the same. Pay no mind to people that try to bring you down. A mother who has been abused had to to whatever it takes to put food on the table. Congratulations, you have a very understanding social worker that is really helping you.
God Bless!!!

Well the hell is going on here since this morning , holy crap you all are yelling over nothing . Lets pray our bill goes threw senate quick .

REMEMBER 4 EVERY THING ELSE GOING ON * ON THIS SITE (ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE U) CAUSE I’LL BE REAL WIT U IF THIS IS NOT PASSED A LOT WORSE S*** WILL BE GOING ON IN THE STREETS TAKING A EXTRA 10-50$ WILL BE THE LEAST OF PROBLEMS SO LETS COOL OUT AND STAY ON POINT PLUS ITS OUR MONEY ANY WAY. Q BESIDE IF NONE OF US EVER LOST OUR JOBS WHERE WOULD THAT MONEY BEING TAKING OUT OF OUR CHECKS EVERY WEEK OR 2 GO ITS ONLY CAUSE THE STATE OF THE WORLD THAT WE ARE ALLOWED extension IF IT WERNT FOR THAT IT WOULD B 26 WEEKS AND THATS IT AND WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MONEY THEY BEEN TAKING OUT HALF YOUR LIFE ??????

Tony:

Just as there are posers using various people’s names, I think you’re the same person as Anonymous, Anonymous1,2 & 3,(where have they been lately, by the way?). Like a couple of others on this forum, you’re so hung up on some other poster, that because I know how to write a sentence, unlike some, or write a longer comment than others, that you, the policeman of the forum must also know that Clark Kent is really Superman. The discussion about the resume is not a scam, “Tony/Anonomyous,” or whoever you are. Since the beginning of job-hunting. and especially when times are tough, it is not unusual to embellish a little on a resume to try and get jobs. You act like a police officer, or like you’re some kind of priest with the comment you made to Carmen. (A) I am not who you say I am and (B) I think you should get back on topic. And by the way, if you are so smart and can tell who people are without knowing for sure, how come you can’t tell that the posts by whoever “June” is were complete bogus remarks designed to bait Carmen? Since you agree with a fake poser, maybe it’s you who is also June, along with the other names you have used? If “June” is not you, then you aren’t as smart as you think you are when it comes to pinning out the real from the fake – Just like the “deb” person who said they knew the extension bill was not gonna pass in the Senate, and people like you replied as if those were legitimate comments. Since you were one of those people, it’s no wonder you’re so wrong about me as well, and if you don’t learn how to change the dates on a resume to make it look more consistent, you will never get a job even if and when jobs become available again.
People who only play by the rules too many times, have lost their 401k’s, homes and jobs, while the real liars, and not just changing a date on a resume, advance. Get real whoever you are.

Carmen:

Again, ignore people who could care less about whatever you must do for yourself and family – They don’t know you despite what they think, and by his/their self-righteous comments positively don’t know what you, I or anybody is going through – Let them think whatever they want – I just want HR 3548 and/or S 1647 to pass, since I can’t get a job regardless of what my resume might indicate – I choose not to tell a prospective employer that I’ve been out of work for as long as I have, and thankfully have references to back it up if necessary. In fact, I say I’m currently working, and can back that up as well. Whatever people must do to take care of themsleves/families – especially in desperate times like these. Let’s really be real. Let Tony and those who are so perfect do it the way they want, and see where it gets them – Right now, it has gotten them to the same place where you and I am, which is out of work and hoping for an extension so we can continue to try and get a decent job.

Laurie, thank you for sticking up for me. Lets ignore them just like i believe Susanny and many others here said. We cant continue arguing with them cause it wont gets us anywhere. Besides the more we defend what we say the more drama it has created. We are better than that. Let’s ignore and continue to pray that things get better. We all are going through hard times and I believe steph or you said that they will judge no matter what so I say whatever. I dont lose any sleep over this crap. As long as my son and my family have a warm home and some food in their stomachs everything else means nothing to me. Again thank you and evryone that showed support and respect. This was a crazy day..oh boy.

Ditto, Carmen.

I’m very concerned that HR 3548 doesn’t get changed when it gets to the Senate, and that the same 13 weeks that were on the bill, along with the 8.5% UE rate, do not get changed to lesser weeks and/or a UE rate higher than what NYS has yet reached. When HR 3548 was passed, I thought it was a done deal. Now, we have to wait to see what, if any changes will be made to this bill which was good for NYS. Either way, even 13 weeks might not be long enough the way things are. I am up all night looking at job postings, and sending out whatever resumes I haven’t already sent – There comes a time when there are little if any more places left to send them to, and that time is pretty much now – In normal times, an effort like this would produce positive results, but these are not normal times. Which is why I would advocate for a further extension to allow us to continue our search, and maybe even learn a new skill, while the the economy regroups, and hopefully more jobs will be hiring during and/or by the 13 weeks(which will go fast), and we won’t have to depend on further extensions or bills. I think an extension will get passed by the Senate, but I just hope it’s the same bill that the House just passed, with the same stipulations. No matter how many weeks they add, they go fast as I’m sure anybody on here knows.

Laurie, just stay positive. I am sure that with some elections coming up soon the senators will fight for us the way they did in congress.I hope we dont get a gap and if we do for it not to be a long one. Many of us here depend on those checks to eat. I think susanny, said she buys food on a daily basis becuase she cant afford to buy alot.

Another thing i did forget to mention before was that the person attcking me for the food stamp issue was telling me to feel ashamed. That im taking advantage of the system. I say that if a person with 3 or four or 6 kids can get public assistance, wic, medicaid and foodstamps and have never paid a single dollar in taxes. Then I am in every right to get at least food stamps. I have paid taxes for eleven years and have papers to prove it. The president gave these people on public assistance $200. for each child for school supplies. Again many of these people have never paid taxes and are in no hurry to do so either. I in the other hand have busted my ass for years. Paid taxes and never complained. Sorry if I think I deserve $50. extra in food stamps.

lets get that bill to senate quickly!!! dont forget to send those letters and make those phone calls…let’s fight for what we have worked so hard for!!! WE CAN DO IT!!!WE CAN DO IT!!!

Carmen:

I feel you, and I have been accused of “running a resume scam,” because I tried to help people by advising not to indicate on a resume or to an interviewer that one has been out of work for nearly 2 years! Then this person(s) attacks me as if that is a crime, and the police are gonna arrest somebody for trying to get a job in any way possible – It is not illegal to change dates on a resume, and it still may not get a person the job, but it sure looks alot better when the dates from one job go right into the other – If the info can be backed up, it is not a crime, and it has been done for years by many more people than me, and is not a crime – I did not invent this idea. The worst thing that would happens if caught embellishing is the person doesn’t get the job, which they wouldn’t get anyway if they told an employer they’ve been out of work for nearly two years. Back to the real topic at hand now:

Thanks to “DIFFERENT TRIBE SAME WAR!!!,” who posted about the new bill introduced by Jack Reid of RI(previous page) – This is encouraging news, and gives hope that the Senate bill will have the same requirements as HR 3548, if in fact they go with it – Courtesy of “DTSW!!!” on previous page – here is link to that bill – let us pray, hope, focus, whatever, on getting this bill passed!

http://reed.senate.gov/newsroom/details.cfm?id=318186

good news regarding reeds bill .. but i am feeling a bit let down looking at the calender i do not see how this bill will be sent through the senate and signed my the pres before the october break it seems almost impossible..
i feel we will not no anything for a while….

laurel:

I don’t know whether they can put the break off a couple of days or so, but personally, being that there is a substantial number of people who will exhaust EB by the end of September, which is not very long from now, I do believe it will signed before or by the end of the month – That’s just my opinion. I have read somewhere that they might be addressing the extension this Friday – If that’s the case, I think whatever the bill they choose will be approved as quickly as the House bill the other day. We will surely find out soon. How long do they break for? A whole month? If so, I think they will rush a bill through.
Good morning……

I think the bill will be signed before the end of the month to many people will be in trouble if they dont .

Telling someone they are breaking the law and cheating other law abiding citizens is not baiting someone, this money comes from OUR taxes and we all should be outraged. Saying “Sorry if I think I deserve $50. extra in food stamps” is a blatant abuse of the system and a very arrogant immature mentality. If you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem. I am off now to my volunteer job. Unlike some people here, I choose to give back for the help I receive, instead of stealing more. Have a nice day.

i hope so … but i understand the senate is not in on friday and monday …
perhaps i heard wrong (i hope so) if that is the case they will not be back in session until tuesday the 29th…
good morning…. i just wish we were able to get more info ..
