President Obama has recently announced that there will be a one-time $250 stimulus check in 2010 to recipients of Social Security. This bonus check is part of of his ongoing effort to stimulate the economy out of recession. Please note that Congress has yet to approve this bill.

Who is eligible for the $250 stimulus check in 2010?
Anyone who is currently receiving Social Security (SS) payments will be eligible for the $250 check. There are also some other groups who will receive this check including SSI and disabled veterans.

It is not known at this time when the payments will be made but it is likely that they will be paid in the first quarter of 2010 (ie before the end of March).

How much will this cost the government?
According to White house officials, the cost of all the stimulus checks will be $13 billion. A large amount of money but don’t forget that the stimulus package for 2009 was almost $800 billion.
Why is the government doing this?
The government is giving out this money in order to try to stimulate the economy. Because of problems in the financial markets and housing markets over the last 2 years, there has been a slowdown in economic activity in America and many job losses. By putting extra money into the economy it is hoped that the decline of the economy can be slowed down or even reversed.
Will there be a Social Security raise this year?
No, in fact part of the reason the $250 bonus check was created was to make up for the fact that there is no cost of living raise in Social Security payments this year.
Will it be a check or electronic payment?
The $250 should be given to you in the same format you currently receive your regular Social Security payment. If you get your SS payment by check then the $250 will also be by check. If you get your SS payment deposited in to your bank account then the $250 will also be deposited into your bank account.

The stimulus package is O.K What will happen is the $250.00 stimulus will go toward paying bills. Not to stimulus the economy. For most of us who is receiving money under $1000.00 like me will use it for paying bills .Not spend on our selves. Seems a small amount, but given the lack of a COLA increase, something is better than nothing I guess. At least we know congress is going to approve this payment for sure.

$250.00 is a penny dropped in a bucket as I will have to use ti to catch up on past bills or neccessities. The social security money is my money and I should get the dignity to receive it in a good ratio to the cost of living.
I believe the goverment is dogging the poor and middle class again. The insurance premiums are going up . Just received notice Humana’s premiun is going from $28.00 to $58.00 per month, an increase of $360.00 per year. A married couple would be paying an extra $720.00 per year plus the medicare premiun which will no doubt go up too!!!! Does? a lousy $250.00 help this? NOT!!!! what i think about the way the govenment is handling social secuity benefits is so unfair to the people i have worked for many years and should be able to be at peace and live good off my benefits but we are not able to get a raise each year all we want is to live our lives comfortable but it is not possible the way they are doing the ones that has retired. this is monies we paid into social secuity to live off doing our retirement . thanks for the 250.00 but i would rather have the increase each year
I live off my SS and looked forward to the raise, now no raise and a check for $250.00 is nice but most of us will have to use that in one month the way prices keep going up. The small raise each month seems to work so why change it. Where are all the changes for the older people of those on SSD. Seems Washington would like to line up people 62 and older shoot us, that would leave Washington almost empty. Yes I will use the $250.00 but just seems wrong.

I feel like the Seniors are one of the poorest groups of Americans in the US and we are being beat down even more by our President and Government, by not giving us a raise, and we have hardly any way of making any extra income to help ourselves out, to pay the bills. Some seniors can take on a second job but thats only if your in good health, and most us are not, thats why we are seniors, and some of us are disabled or taking care of a sick spouse. So what are we to do, move in with our kids who can hardly make ends meet? Who wants to burden their children with taking care of us. I don’t. I’d still like to have my independence as long as I can afford to do it on my own but we are being pushed into giving up our independence early or checking out early because we can’t afford to live and survive. Why is our President and our Government doing this to the Seniors? I am ashamed of our Government, our Country, and our President, because they don’t think enough of us to give us a raise on our Social Security, that we worked hard and paid into for years and years. Our Country should stand up for this issue because someday you young ones are going to be in the same situation as us Seniors are today. We all need to pull together or our Government will continue to walk all over us, and I mean all of us young and old alike. Were all riding in the same boat just at different times. $250.00 Does not cover nearly any of the increases Seniors will be paying out for medical and drug costs. This is certainly unfair, since Seniors had money deducted from their pay checks all of their working years, and now they are being kicked to the curb in many ways. I also feel paying tax on Social Security Checks if a crime, since what people receive is low already, plus with medicare deducted from that amount, what is left?

I’m glad we are getting something. No, it’s not enough. I live on SSI disability, because my health went south BEFORE I could pay in enough to get regular SS. So, I only get 529.00 a month. I, too, will have to use the 250.00 for BILLS. NOT, to stimulate the economy.

I worked for over 30 years as a state employee and found myself sick with a life threatening illness that could kill me, so I had to stop working in a job that was very stressful. I am now disabled and taking over eight medications a day that I can hardly pay for, paying a mortgage that I can hardly keep up, and high utilities that I can hardly keep on, and food that I can hardly buy. I would have given anything to keep my high paying job, and live with dignity. What dignity is there in receiving a $250 one time check, for all the financial problems that we now have. I feel that it may help me pay one utility bill, but what do I do about all this other stuff I have to worry about? Take the raises from all of those worthless government officials who go on vacations, give dinner parties, and go out on “dates” with their wives and families and distribute that money to the seniors and disabled people who have really worked their behinds off.

I am receiving a Social Security Check and a Veteran’s Disability check with a Navy Retirement check. All together they pay the rent and utilities of our home. No COLA will be received on any of these checks and a one time one check for $250.00 does not make sense to me. We make just $50 over the limit for food stamps. Thanks a lot for the Cost of living increase that our government promised us when we were younger and could work, but now it is too late.
Since there is no COLA in 2010 the $250.00 check equals about 2% of a increase.

well $250 is better than nothing-Maybe that’s why the gov raised the medicare monthly premium for new enrollies to $110 (it’s only $96 for current medicare beneficiaries) with no increase in medicare benefits using some bs rule they came up with to bypass the law-typical.

Yes, $250 is better than nothing, but, it is $230 less than what I would have received from COLA. If you are retired military over 65 you will not receive any additional funds on your military retirement because congress has lumped Social Security and Military COLAs together and we are allowed only one stimulas check to cover the lack of COLAs that would have been received. This is the way congress treat the veterans. I guess I am still having post traumatic stress from Vietnam. Not what happened over there but how we were received by the American public when we came home.
Hello all. After reading all these posts, I feel even more down. I’m not a vet, nor am I a senior. I’m 38, and became disabled after working for over 15 years. I had a good job, was married with 2 children. Now I’m divorced with 2 kids, have severe depression [who doesn’t?], my bones are necrotic, and I have a slew of other problems.
Since my daughter is now 18 and cannot find a job in this economy and has a child of her own, she lives with me–along with her boyfriend. I’m don’t want a pity party, I just want to know how I’m not eligible for anything with 5 people in my house. My monetary haul for the month is 1,164.00.. it doesn’t seem to make sense. I am thankful that I’ve managed to keep a roof over our heads, but the stress alone is eating me alive.

Dorrian, I understand you one-hundred percent. I have two college degrees in the legal field, but became ill with a life-threatening illness myself. I too, had a very good job as a legal stenographer and court reporter but had to come off work due to sickness. I did okay for a few years, but now, life is nothing like it once was for me. I am divorced also and my children are married and living their own lives. I’m not complaining; I’m okay with the $250.00, but we all could really use more than this amount. I think that Obama is doing a very good job, but there is just so much he can do. There are the other government officials who have to pass the laws that he brings before them, and all of them will not be approved. If I could run for office in my state, I would, so that I could fight for the disabled and senior citizens. However, my health will not permit me to do so. To everyone here, just take the $250.00 and spend it whatever way you want, and hope that next year we will get the COL raise and that it will be a 15 or 20 percent raise.

If taxes are owed to the IRS will the $250.00 be withheld and paid to the IRS. I experienced this with the tax stimulus which was suppose to be given in order to stimulate the economy. It only gave the monies back to the IRS. What, stimulating the government as opposed to the economy. I wonder, how many people owe the IRS a debt? What would that add up to? Maybe $300.00 in tax stimulus times maybe three hundred million? All going to the IRS? If they just take the money back then how is this stimulating the economy?
