President Obama has recently announced that there will be a one-time $250 stimulus check in 2010 to recipients of Social Security. This bonus check is part of of his ongoing effort to stimulate the economy out of recession. Please note that Congress has yet to approve this bill.

Anyone who is currently receiving Social Security (SS) payments will be eligible for the $250 check. There are also some other groups who will receive this check including SSI and disabled veterans.

It is not known at this time when the payments will be made but it is likely that they will be paid in the first quarter of 2010 (ie before the end of March).

How much will this cost the government?
According to White house officials, the cost of all the stimulus checks will be $13 billion. A large amount of money but don’t forget that the stimulus package for 2009 was almost $800 billion.
Why is the government doing this?
The government is giving out this money in order to try to stimulate the economy. Because of problems in the financial markets and housing markets over the last 2 years, there has been a slowdown in economic activity in America and many job losses. By putting extra money into the economy it is hoped that the decline of the economy can be slowed down or even reversed.
Will there be a Social Security raise this year?
No, in fact part of the reason the $250 bonus check was created was to make up for the fact that there is no cost of living raise in Social Security payments this year.
Will it be a check or electronic payment?
The $250 should be given to you in the same format you currently receive your regular Social Security payment. If you get your SS payment by check then the $250 will also be by check. If you get your SS payment deposited in to your bank account then the $250 will also be deposited into your bank account.

How can you not give us a C.O.L. Adjustment? When our medical percription cost will rise 200% from B.C.B.S. for the year of 2010.
I only have one percription and I have to pay $41.00 per month, plus the co-pay for the medicine. Is that fair. The medicine, if not on a plan only cost $22.00 per month. So, I am paying $49.00 dollars for a $22.00 dollar medicine per month. You might say than don’t get the coverage, and gamble that you won’t have to take any other percriptions, but I can’t gamble like that at age 68 years. Old cost of coverage was $180.00 per yr. New coverage is $492.00 per yr. an increase of $312.00 per yr. So there goes the stimulus check to medical payments, plus $62.00 dollars off my S/S check.

Well I’m 67, and I have the stupid Medicare. I had to pay for new
glasses of 250 dollars, I have to pay out of pocket if I need to go to the
Chiropractor, so far I donot take any meds, I’m glad of that, but would
like them to add more medical coverage, such as dental, hearing, and
eyeware. Yes it is rediculus how they think they can run our lives. We
worked hard for our S.S. and they should not deny us. The welfare
recipients get theirs. Medicare only pays 10 o/o, it should pay more,
who can afford to the 20 o/o, or a dental bill, a Medicare supplement
on what we get, I had to retire early, at 62.
I would like to add that as a disabled older american at age 57. I know others that are either seniors or disabled that also have to rely on these government benifits. After working for as long as I could I was unfortunate to have become disabled.
We are all having to survive on below poverty incomes. None of us are getting over $700.00 a month to live on as it is. Now consider that we will not be getting $1000.00 that we should have to help us through next year. Instead we will must “THANK GOD” for the $250.00.
Every time We are given a hand out like this one. They are taking from us with at least 2 others. All I can say is it is to bad that those whom created our subfinancial states will not ever have to suffer the same fates that they have put us in.
Just be happy that you get a monthly check some people are denied benefits so be grateful for what you get.

I thank God for this $250.00 that,s coming here either in January or March 2010 it will help a lot. Now, I thank that President Obama needs to raise our checks every year. I worked hard many years ago. So, I paid into Social Security and earn the required credits. I lived most of my early life with my ex husband while he was in the military travelling the world. Now, I am receiving my early (62) Social Security which isn’t much hence not working the past 20 years. I am re-married and thank God to someone younger who is still working! If we were living on 2 Social Security checks we would be on the street! I look forward to the raises each year and now to find out not only do we not get a raise in 10 but nil in 11? These young people who praise the President and t ell us we are all crazy, I want to know what are they going to do when it is their time to retire! Will we still hear the praises?

A $250.00 stimulus is a joke which hasn’t even been approved by congress. They get their raises every year and that’s basically what they care about. They pass out billions to big organizations and the little guy on social security gets $250.00. I am 63 and have been on social security since Oct. of 2008. My wife is 65 and she gets medicare plus she has to get a supplement insurance to pay what medicare doesn’t. Plus a prescription drug plan. The health care plan was passed in the senate but with a lot of bonuses to get some senators to vote for it. At least the one comforting thing I feel good about is that I didn’t vote for Obama.

Religion shouldn’t fit into the stimulus at all. All recipients of social security should get more. I am fortunate that I also get a state retirement check too and if I just got social security things would be a lot worse. I also have 2 boarders living with us. So keep in mind my comments are related to the stimulus check and not to any other matters that people want to complain about. I don’t know about anyone else but I am a single mom with a disabled daughter with heart problems I don’t have enough income to live outside of housing not like I really want my children to see me struggle so hard. I received a letter from the gov. that there will be no pay increase that is fine but then a few days later I receive a letter saying my rent is going up $100. more but yet I don’t get a pay increase but my cost of living is taking all of my checks I struggle to buy food for my house not even to mention christmas. So this little $250. is not going to cover the extra $100. that my rent went up too.
Tiffney I know everything has gone up and recipients of social security and disabled should get a cost of living adjustment. The index the government uses for COLA is not a true assessment of the cost of living. When you make as much money as the politicians make they are able to buy anything they want and don’t even look at the price. $250.00 is nothing compared to the raises the politicians will get. That’s all they think about plus all the kickbacks they can get too. They probably have a special meeting all the time to laugh at how they are putting the screws to the people. My mortgage in 2 years time has gone up $60.00 a month because the property taxes go up. Property taxes are a big part of the foreclosure problem too. But government and politicians blame it on the mortgage companies and big banks so they can give them a handout. Why don’t they give the people a handout instead. My wife and I are both retired and it’s not easy living on social security.

I have been disabled for over 20 years now, and have struggled to make it from month to month. I receive $846.00 monthly, and find it very hard to make it till I receive my next check. But… I also see, Factories shutting down, layoffs, and unemployment growing by the day! I see homeless walking our streets in sub-zero temps, And Thank God for my $846.00 check! Sure the stimulas checks are nice, and they help, I like receiving them as much as anyone else. Don’t get me wrong on that! But, If we don’t, We Don’t! Then we cut corners, make adjustments, and move on! I’m sure we will all make it through, and don’t have it that bad, Because if we did…We wouldn’t be able to afford internet or a computer, to post these comments!

Why, doesn’t the Government tell us when the $250 Stimulus Check will be given to us? Last year, 2009, it came about the second week in January. If they aren’t going to give it to us, then they need to give us a cost of living on our SS check’s. I, like almost every one on SS or SSI, really do need the $250, now. Not in the middle of the year. Sure could buy some good food with that.

Anyway, Congress hasn’t even passed a $250 stimulus for us yet, so don’t be looking for it anytime soon. If they do pass the bill, as slow as they are, it will be another couple of months before they can get their stuff together. I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you…for sure you should not be counting it into your budget quite yet!

I know that there is millions of people in the same situation that my family is in, however we are always just a month away every month from losing our home. The gas to heat our home is so expensive I cant afford to pay it, then in March the gas companys’ will step in and demand their money or they will shut off your gas. We barly have enough money to eat. My husband is very ill and I was laid off from my job. There should be more help for people who have worked their whole lifes and has paid millions of dollars for taxes. People on welfare that has never had to work just is not right. Take care of the people that has put their time in people who want to work not lazy people who want to set around and have babies just to get a raise through the welfare system. People on welfare get their bills paid,food stamps and cheap housing. Give back to the working people and people who have worked their whole lifes and have lost their jobs. They need to start investicating people on welfare to ensure they only have the amount of people living in their low income housing. Make sure their are no extra income coming in that their not reporting, check for drug use. If people on welfare kids are in school they need to work. besides that people on welfare get free day care as well. what is wrong with America? Land of the free? For whom? Don’t even get me started on people who do not even belong in the U.S that are taking the American jobs for lower pay.
