Update –Will there be a stimulus check in 2010?]

When will the $250 checks be paid out?

It is not known at this time when the payments will be made but it is likely that they will be paid in the first quarter of 2010 (ie before the end of March).

Is there any income limit for the $250 payment?

No, it doesn’t matter if you have other income or if you are working or not.  It doesn’t matter how much income you make – you will still get the check.

How much will this cost the government?

According to White house officials, the cost of all the stimulus checks will be $13 billion.  A large amount of money but don’t forget that the stimulus package for 2009 was almost $800 billion.

Why is the government doing this?

The government is giving out this money in order to try to stimulate the economy.  Because of problems in the financial markets and housing markets over the last 2 years, there has been a slowdown in economic activity in America and many job losses.  By putting extra money into the economy it is hoped that the decline of the economy can be slowed down or even reversed.

Will it be a check or electronic payment?

The $250 should be given to you in the same format you currently receive your regular Social Security payment.  If you get your SS payment by check then the $250 will also be by check.  If you get your SS payment deposited in to your bank account then the $250 will also be deposited into your bank account.

can anyone tell for sure if we’re getting this check the 31 of March is only a week away. if everyone is going to get them then they’llhave to hustleand start them out. I’ll believe this when its in my account. I thought this was voted by Congress if not hurrah was this put here just people would stop gripeing or is this the real thing if you can show me the proof I’d really like it.

as a mother on ssi my elec bill was $900.00 dollars for one month and i draw $505.50 so i could use this money so i can pay bills before my elec bill. thanks sam

well another day to sit and wonder if we’re going to get what we are supposed to OUR STIMULUS CHECKS WHERE THEY?????

It means alot to all those in need.I myself could use the little bit of extra and i know many others are in my position .I have kinda figured out that if we got approx the same raise as we did last year we wouldve got an extra $444 raise and if we did recieve the $250 proposed stimulus that we would deduct that from the approx raise leaves $194 per person on ss that the goverent ment saves anyway .So we are just asking for a part of what where supposed to get in our cola raises anyway…

Sheryl Ellis… where did you just read that we are going to get the $250.00 for 2010? Last I knew congress voted it out 50 to 47.
Would be nice if by some miracle we would get it though.
So again, where did you read this info, would love to read it too !!!

well looks like we dont get one…. congress turned it down … n then turned around n gave money to Haiti…. go figure

well looks like we dont get one…. congress turned it down … n then turned around n gave money to Haiti…. go figure…does not make sense besides the cost of living has gone up for everyone …. go to the grocery store and see for yourself! food went up presciptions went up and rent has gone up tooo! who care about gas going up as most people on ssi do not drive or buy gas anyway. I bet congress got a raise tho!

I have two sons ,both disabled. My older one is receiving social security disability and he received the $250 stimulus check on March 10. My other son is on SSI and has not received anything. Why one and not the other?

I am 80 years old and am on social security. And I didn’t get no check either. I guess they thought I didn’t deserve one since I was born in America, worked in America for 50 years. They probably sent my money to Haitia or some country that wouldn’t care 50 cents about America or Americans.

my son got his and i stell have have not got one when will we all get it i don;t think this is right i live alone and need to pay bills

i heard we are getting them sometime in April.. so if some got them then everyone should and we just got to be patient and wait and see,, i really wish we would of gotten the cola raise but the 250.00 is worht waitng for i hope it comes soon as i have bills and rent to pay so the sooner the better,, thank you president obama just wish it was more money and quicker.. thanks again

don’t on our government we’re just not poor enough look how slowly they acted when Katrina . I saw people dying because they weren’t helped in time.WHY does the U.S.always rush to some other countries aid when we have so much poverty here.My grocercy bill went from $95 every 2 weeks to $169 and that’s just for 2.and then only the barest of neccessities.don’t count on getting a stimulus check anytime soon. I guess we should all be thankful for something but WHAT.

I am like everyone else, waiting for the stimulus check promised in 2010. Whats going on??? I live by myself and receive a small SS check, everything going up but see no relief for the Senior Citizen. It hurt when the SS did NOT give a cost of living raise for this year. My utilities, drugs, food, Doctor bills and other things went up, how are we suppose to pay for all of this when we can’t seem to make ends meet already. I thought we were promised this raise to take the place of the cost of living raise we did NOT get.
Can anyone give an honest answer and not lead us in circles??

i read up above that 2 people stated they have receaved there stimulus checks , and a week or so ago our local paper claimed we would get 250 dollar stim checks in mail by end of april , i sure hope so , but theres so many saying yes and so many saying no , i just dont know what to beleave 8(

denny? which paper did u see it in just wondering i would like to know if we are getting it also ..

We, the people, need help. Most of us disabled Americans have worked hard all our lives, paying into this system, and now that we are no longer ABLE to work, need assistance living day by day.

For what it’s worth, I remember [my] last years stimulus check came somewhere after April 15 and before the first week in May. So, because 2 people have mentioned above having already received theirs, and because I haven’t heard Obama say we WOULDN’T be receiving a $250 stimulus check, I’ll wait patiently until the end of April before I start to panic. I have faith in Obama, though trust me; I could have used this stimulus check months ago already! I’m hurting as most everyone else.

May we all see some relief…soon!

I think we are screwed as far as a stimulus check goes. I was holding out hope but now I have none. I just talked to a long time friend who is in Govt and is a republican. Since the Obama team has so completely messed us up this year by giving us no COLA raise I thought our hope would be that the republicans would be on our side. He tells me the exact opposite is true. The republicans want us to all stay upset and angry at democrats so we make sure we vote them out of office. One way for the republicans to do that is to make sure they vote against anything right now that will help us and put us in a better frame of mind about the current govt.

We are the victims of this disgusting game they are playing. I hate them all!!

Cathy, Congress enacted the COLA provision as part of the 1972 Social Security Amendments (…when President Obama was 11 years old!), and automatic annual COLAs began in 1975. Before that, benefits were increased only when Congress enacted special legislation.

So you see, the Obama team has NOT “so completely messed us up this year by giving us no COLA raise” as you so eloquently stated. Quite the contrary; despite the fact there was no COLA increase this year, President Obama was trying to HELP by putting a few extra dollars in your pocket, and still may succeed in doing so. Please get your facts straight before you start spewing your Republican friends “talking points” (lies).

From the Social Security website: http://www.ssa.gov/cola/2010/2010faqs.htm#q3

Q. What is a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA)?

A. A COLA is an automatic adjustment in benefits that occurs annually. The purpose of the COLA is to ensure that the purchasing power of Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits is not eroded by inflation. It is based on the percentage increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the third quarter of one year to the third quarter of the next. If there is no increase, there is no COLA.

Q. Who determines the CPI-W?

A. The CPI-W is determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the Department of Labor. By law, it is the official measure used by the Social Security Administration to calculate COLAs.

Q. Why is there no COLA for 2010?

A. By law, Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits increase automatically each year if there is an increase in the Bureau of Labor Statistics? Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), from the third quarter of the last year to the corresponding period of the current year. This year there was no increase in the CPI-W from the third quarter of 2008 to the third quarter of 2009.

And THAT’s why there is no COLA increase this year, not because “The Obama team has so completely messed us up this year by giving us no COLA raise”.

Brother man, I do understand what you are saying and what they are telling us as the reason for no COLA raise. I understand this quote very well

“Because, by law, military retiree and social security raises are tied to the Labor Department’s Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures yearly inflation in the cost of goods. This year there was actually a decrease in the price of goods measured by the Department of Labor. This is because the CPI is heavily influenced by oil prices, as oil prices involve direct transportation costs, heating costs and even the cost of food and clothing.”

The problem i have with it is that try to understand as I may I still pay more every time I go to the grocery store, the pharmacy and any retail outlet than what I did a year ago. I don’t know who is finding cheaper items or where they shop at but I wish they would tell me so I can shop there too.

I know that prices have gone up, it doesn’t matter if we have a govt trying to convince me otherwise. I can compare what I paid for items a year ago and what I pay for the same thing today.

Obama’s govt is the first one in over 35 years who have not given a COLA raise.

I feel your pain (…honestly, I do). But what you’re not getting is that the President does not “give” or “not give” the COLA increase. Whether or not we receive a COLA increase is determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the Department of Labor and the Social Security Administration, based on laws they passed in 1972.

Brother Man –

On earlier posts, I tried several times to nicely enlighten folks that the ‘prez’ has nothing to do with dispension COLA issues.

I’ve tried several times to get folks to recognize that, while a (stimulus-type) check in the mail is always nice, it’s generally one of those white lies that are bantered about all the time (“…. da check’s in da mail.”)

Don’t plan on it, don’t budget for it, and (absolutely) don’t spend it ’til ya get it. Please….you’re thinking in the smaller picture. A $250 payday isn’t gonna be, and shouldn’t be, a life-changer.

This whole blog is a waste of time. The bloggers looking for an update on their SSI/SSA income should be checking at the place where REAL answers are provided….the Social Security website. Not a blog where most of the participants don’t have REAL answers. Only hopes.

I just went to the SSwebsite .you know what I found out , absolutely NOTHING THEY AREN’T TELLING ANYONE ANYTHING SO BUSTER WHAT DO WE DO NOW ya can’t win for losing thank you I’d like to know who all these people are who say they got a stimulus allready they must live somewhere else.

Shirley, Same here. I also just went to their web site. There is nada there about a stimulus check for 2010. Not one word could I find.

I really don’t think anyone has gotten a stimulus check for this year. how could they? it hasn’t been approved or even voted on yet? They may have gotten some kind of check for something else that they are confusing with a stimulus check. SSA always sends letters about any money we get from them so I would like to ask those who state they got a stimulus check for 2010 to post a copy of the letter they received about it with the date of the letter showing. Of course they should block out their names and identifying info when they do that but I would sure like to read one of those letters.

Shirley, Cathy, Denny, Amy et al —

Of course, there’s nothing on the SS website relative to a stimulus check…none has been approved. There is no direction to give, no alerts to convey.

O yeah, try that petition thing……that process ALWAYS works. Just ask the AARP. A gejillion signatures ain’t gonna get a senator to budge. Unless, of course, it’s in November.

Jess

yes, I was trying to find out about the stimulus check. They say one thing on one site another on the other site. What is really going on.

Hi All, Several weeks ago I posted a statement/comment on this site. I have two adult sons who are both disabled. Both live in New York and I am the Payee for both disability checks. My older son received his first social security disability check on March 10, 2010 and the $250.00 stimulus check. On that same day he and I received seperate letters stating he would be receiving the stimulus check. My younger son who has been on Supplemental Security Income for 10 years has NOT received a letter nor $250.00 check. The only reason I came across this site is because I found nothing on the SS website and Googled stimulus checks. What makes sense to me is that if anyone HAS received a check they would’nt have come across this site. Just thought I would put it out there. I’m sure that my son is not the only one to have received a check. His luck, the government will tell him they made a mistake and ask him to pay it back.

A $250 stimulus WAS given in 2009 and the IDEA WAS being tossed around about giving ANOTHER $250 stimulus in 2010 but ultimately it was voted DOWN so NO there WILL NOT be a stimulus given in 2010. Yes it would have been nice but it’s NOT going to happen. Keep using those coupons and pinching those pennies people.

Elizabeth, where do you get this info at. Everything I have heard is that it is not voted down. In fact, it hasn’t even been voted on yet!

Your arrogant tone (keep using those coupons and pinching those pennies) is insulting.

On March 3, the Senate voted down the proposal for a $250 bonus check by a score of 50-47.

The reason that the plan was voted down was because of the cost. It was estimated that sending out the $250 checks to Social Security recipients as well as SSI recipients would have cost about $14 billion dollars. Considering the current deficit is at record levels, the Senate decided that some cuts had to be made. The other reason is that the Social Security payments are indexed to inflation which is why they were increase 5.8% last year, so to give a bonus when inflation is low, defeats the purpose of the indexing

Justin, where is the link to the actual report stating this was voted down? I have also read that online but it is only hearsay. One person says it on a blog and then it goes around to other blogs which mean nothing. I want a link to SSA where this info is officially documented. Because when I go to SSA there is nothing there and when I spoke to my friend in Govt I was told it wasn’t looking good but was still undecided.

I think a lot of people are getting their info from this blog

http://www.savingtoinvest.com/2009/10/extra-250-for-social-security.html

This is not an official blog of anything to do with the Govt. At first look it may seem so but it is a personal blog written by a “personal finance junkie'”( his words on his “about” page). He gives no links to back up his claims so it is just another blog about what someone thinks has happened with no official link in sight.

if we were to get one… we would have gotten it by now especially those who do direct deposit

Brown and Voinovich both representative for Ohio voted down (against) the passage of the stimulus payment. I will make certain I do exactly the same for them when I do my voting.

You should all check that site and find out how your representatives voted. Of the 38 Senators who voted for the passage (meaning we would get it if passed) of this bill only 8 of them were Democrats. Does someone want to tell me again how Obama and his democrats aren’t screwing with us.

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=111&session=2&vote=00035

Kathleen, I bet that stimulus check your son recently received was actually for 2009. if his disability was recently approved those usually include a lump sum payment dating back to the month you applied, minus 5 months. So if he was approved and his back lump sum payment included money for 2009 then he would have also been eligible for the 2009 stimulus check.

Out of the 59 senator votes that voted against us getting a 2010 stimulus check 49 of them were democrats.

In viewing the evening news aroun the 3 or 4 day of March it was broadcasted that would not be a stimulus rebate check for those of us who are receiving Social Security and S.S.I. benefits. The reason that was given is because the economy has improved since last year, so no go and possibly we will not receive an increase in monthly benefits the first of 2011 either. Can you show me how and where the economy has inproved so much I am still struggling, but I don’t and can’t give up hope that things will change for us.

Kathleen,
Since you stated that your son just got his first check, The most probable reason that your son got a stimulus check is that it is part of the back pay from last year. And yes, they would send a seperate letter notifying you of a seperate payment, even if it was was back up for the 2009 stimulus.

Sadly, I dont think a stimulus check is in the cards for us for 2010…
